Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Margot Robbie are unleashing the spending power of women

New York  — It’s the summer of girl power, fueled by Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and “Barbie.”

Millions of people across generations are paying through the nose for these experiences, providing a women-powered boost to the economy.

“I loved going with my family” to Taylor Swift and “Barbie,” said 15-year-old Chelsea Deutsch. “I don’t think I would have rather had it any other way.”

“Barbie” has so far raked in over $1 billion and counting at the box office. Beyoncé’s tour has been such a success, she was blamed for boosting inflation in Stockholm. And the final six nights of Taylor Swift’s Eras tour in Los Angeles are expected to bring $320 million to the city, according to the California Center for Jobs and the Economy.

“Barbie” was distributed by Warner Bros., which is owned by CNN’s parent company Warner Bros. Discovery.

“I think what we’re seeing right now is that women are not to be underestimated. They lift up economies and that impact is not to be overlooked,” said Kristina Chiapetta, executive strategy director at Landor & Fitch. “But brands haven’t been talking to them in their language for a really long time.”

That oft-unspoken language: authenticity and empowerment.

Is the Movie going to have a Barbie House?

Robbie spoke about the movie’s toy-tastic style during a December 2022 conversation with Carey Mulligan for Variety‘s “Actors on Actors” series. When Mulligan asked if the film would have any Barbie houses, Robbie responded, “The Dreamhouses? You’ll see some Dreamhouses. And it will be everything you ever dreamed of.”

A positive message

Eleven women and girls from Chelsea’s extended family – spanning ages 12 to 54 – went to see Taylor Swift at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. At least seven have seen “Barbie.”

“I think it was nice to be a part of things that had such a girl positive message, which is definitely not the norm. So hopefully, maybe this sparks the turn, and maybe we get to see some more of that,” said Jennifer Deutsch, Chelsea’s mom.

Women control or influence over 80% of consumer spending, Chiapetta says. The secret is how to tap into that.

There are more women than ever in their prime working age in the United States, earning – and spending – a paycheck.

Women’s labor force participation rates have rebounded from the pandemic “she-cession” and returned to pre-pandemic form.

In June, the labor force participation rate for women in their prime working age of 25 to 54 years old hit an all-time high of 77.8%, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. The rate retreated slightly in July to 77.5% but still remained historically high.

‘I made it happen’

Helen Polise was not going to let two canceled flights stop her from seeing the last Taylor Swift concert in Los Angeles with her daughter Julie.

“Come hell or high water, I was going today. So I made it happen,” said Polise.

Their plans to see Taylor Swift’s Eras tour have been in the works since May: a girl-power weekend, filled with the concert, dinners, outfits, beads, a last-minute first-class ticket and “Barbie.” That all adds up.

“This was so different than anything that we’ve ever done together. So I think I was willing to do whatever it took,” said Polise.

The relatability factor to the women on screen and on stage is part of what makes these women-powered experiences this summer so special, Chiapetta said.

“I think what’s really powerful when you watch the ‘Barbie’ movie or read or listen to Taylor Swift lyrics is it expresses the full multi-dimensional experience of being a woman today. And that’s something that we haven’t seen a lot of when you look at traditional marketing. The way a lot of brands talk to women is in this very one-dimensional way,” said Chiapetta.

Big spending

Some tickets to Swift and Beyoncé are going for over $1,000. That priced some people out and forced others to pony up big bucks.

“Men go to a lot of sporting games and spend a lot of money on sporting tickets, and that’s never considered absurd or over the top. For us, this is like my Super Bowl,” said 27 year-old Julie Polise, Helen’s daughter.

Julie and the young girls from the family of 11 who all saw Taylor Swift walked away from the “Barbie” movie with their moms in mind.

“We’re trying to get our mom to see it because I think she’d love it. Because my mom’s always loving the girl power,” said Dylan Ritcher, 12, who is part of Polise’s family.

And as many moms may relate to, when your daughter wants to share the biggest moment of the summer with you, you say yes and find a way to make it happen – because that memory will be priceless.

“When your girls get older and they’re 20 and 23 and they want to go to a concert with you, are you kidding me?” said Lisa Van Strat, who saw Taylor Swift with her two girls and family. “Who doesn’t say sign me up? Yes, yes! How much? Whatever – I’ll eat rice, I’m going to see this concert.”

One of Namibia’s Popular Spot is Fish River Canyon

Fish River Canyon

In the far south of Namibia, the Fish River rises in the centre of the country, before flowing south into the Orange River, on Namibia’s border with South Africa. In between, it has formed the great Fish River Canyon – the largest canyon in the southern hemisphere, and probably only second to Arizona’s Grand Canyon in terms of size. Approaching the Fish River Canyon from the north is like driving across Mars. The vast rocky landscape breaks up into a series of spectacular cliffs, formed by the Fish River as it meanders between boulders over half a kilometre below. Its size is impressive: 161km long, up to 27km wide and almost 550m at its deepest. Keep in mind that the river is seasonal and generally only flows in the rainy season from January to April.

Holidays to the Fish River Canyon area

Most of our visitors who come to the Fish River Canyon will come for a few days as part of a self-drive holiday around the country; flying here can be costly, and there are currently no scheduled planes flying this way. The main attractions of the area are:

Namibia - Fish River Lodges

Ai Ais National Park

The area around the southern part of Fish River Canyon was proclaimed a conservation area in 1969. The land was as poor in potential for agriculture as it is rich in potential for tourism, and this was a way of protecting the area from uncontrolled development. The 345,000ha national park now encompasses Ai-Ais and Hobas. A more recent initiative has seen the park linked with the environmentally similar Richtersveld in South Africa, to form Namibia’s first transfrontier or peace park: Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park.

Flora and Fauna

Driving around you will probably see few larger animals, though there are many if you look hard. These include herds of Hartmann’s mountain zebra, small groups of kudu and the smaller klipspringer antelope, which are usually seen in pairs. Baboon make no secret of their presence if around, and dassies (alias rock rabbits) are common, but leopard, though certainly present, are very rarely seen. It’s not unusual to drive for a few hours, and see no mammals at all.

Birds, too, are around but often not obvious. This isn’t a centre for birdwatching, as only about 60 species are thought to live here, but look out for the majestic black eagle, as well as the rock kestrel and rock pigeon, and especially for the localised yellow-rumped eremomela which occur near Ai-Ais. Karoo bustards and ostrich are the highlights of the open plains above the canyon itself. In the canyon itself, herons, cormorants and kingfishers take advantage of the river’s bounty, while both martins and mountain wheatear keep the hiker company from above.

Vegetation is sparse. Both on the top and on the canyon’s slopes, the larger species are mostly euphorbias, with the odd quivertree and occasional deep red aloe, Aloe gariepensis. However, parts of the canyon’s base where there is water are quite lush – like the Sulphur Springs with its palm trees and further south towards Ai-Ais. There you can expect camelthorn, wild tamarisk and ebony trees, amongst others.

Hiking in the Fish River Canyon

Keen hikers will know that the Fish River Canyon hike is one of Africa’s a toughest hikes. This five-day, self-guided hike is possible for groups of three or more people, but only when it’s cool (May – Sept). We can arrange for the permits and transport to get you to and from the hike – perhaps building it into a fly-drive itinerary. We can even arrange for a professional guide to accompany you, or a satellite phone to take. However, the responsibility for buying and carrying all your food and equipment remains strictly with you. Once you start the hike, there’s no easy way out!

For a slightly less demanding options, ask us about the shorter hikes, plus a full five day full supported hike, organised by Fish River Lodge in the Canyon Nature Park – slightly up-river from the national park, on the western side.

Geology of the Fish River Canyon

Surprisingly the canyon was not in fact carved out by water erosion of the Fish River. The beginnings of the canyon started about 500 million years ago when a fracture of the earth’s crust resulted in the collapse of the valley bottom forming a broad valley running north-south. Southward moving glaciers deepened it with more faults and erosion adding to the effect. It was only about 50 million years ago when the Fish River started to cut its way along the valley floor. The fault accounts for the gorge-like channel and the occurrence of the hot sulphurous springs found at Ai-Ais.

Africa’s Largest Canyon?

Pedants cite Ethiopia’s Blue Nile Gorge as being Africa’s largest canyon. It is certainly deeper than the Fish River Canyon, at about 1,000m, but it is also narrower (about 20km wide at its widest), and probably shorter as well. Like many vague superlatives, ‘largest’ is difficult to define. In this case, we would have to measure the volume of the canyon – and even then there would be questions about exactly where it begins and ends. Suffice to say that both are too large to take in at one sight, and both are well worth visiting.

History of the Canyon

Situated in a very arid region of Namibia, the Fish River is the only river within the country that usually has pools of water in its middle reaches during the dry season. Because of this, it was known to the peoples of the area during the early, middle and late Stone Ages. Numerous early sites dating from as early as 50,000 years ago have been found within the canyon – mostly beside bends in the river.
Around the beginning of this century, the Ai-Ais area was used as a base by the Germans in their war against the Namas. It was finally declared a national monument in 1962. Ai-Ais Restcamp was opened in 1971.

Sweet Cherries

Cherries are thick, rich and plum-like texture fruit. They’re use for making jelly, jam and bakery pastries. The Europeans enjoy eating cherry pastries with a cup of tea or coffee in the evenings. Cherry products are found in most grocery stores globally. Sweet cherries are the ones most often found in markets. They have a thick, rich, and almost plum-like texture. Traditionally, sweet cherry trees are self-sterile and best for an orchard or in a garden. You’ll need at least two or three trees so that they can pollinate each other. However, a recent and exciting development in sweet cherries is the dwarf self-pollinating.

Sweet cherries produce delicious fruit and are usually grown as small open trees, garden or fences. They can also be grown in large containers – and if you choose a self-fertile cultivate, they will fruit without a pollination partner. Acid cherries are self-fertile, tolerate some shade and are ideal for a north-facing wall. Their fruits are excellent for cooking and make delicious jam.

Plant

Cherries prefer deep, fertile and well-drained soil with pH 6.5-6.7. They dislike shallow, sandy or badly drained soils.

Acid cherries tolerate some shade and are suitable in the north-facing walls, open gardens or fences, or as open center bush trees.

Cherries grow properly well in southern and central England, well nourished tropical and moderate temperatures which are common in the United States.

Sweet cherries are grow to about 4-6m (14-20ft) making medium height trees and are best grown – ideally against sunny walls in gardens.

Semi dwarf cherries trees grows to 3-4m (10-13ft) – they are ideal as dwarf bush trees or for containers.

Acid cherries are less vigorous, grows to a height and spread of 3-3.5m (10-12ft).

Some sweet cherries need pollination partners, others are self fertile, producing fruit on a single tree. Acid cherries are self-fertile. Cherries flower early in the year, if frost is forecast, protect the blossom with horticultural fleece, removing it during the day to allow access to pollinating insects.

Plant cherries during the planting season.

Surinam cherry is the product of a fruiting bush native to Suriname and Brazil. The fruit is most frequently eaten by children, although recipes for surinam cherry jam and jelly are use in some parts of the world. The bush is most commonly grown for ornamental purposes, with scant attention being paid to the fruit it produces. Kangaroo Comic Strips

It is belief to be known that the existence of Kangaroos were much similar to those of human beings where their evolution mirrored that of most individuals working in estates, farms and gardens long ago in Africa, who migrated from Africa to different continents of the world. Kangaroos were long dropped in Australia to help with preliminary irrigation to aid in developing green vegetation and plateaus.

Kangaroos are known to feed on water melons, fresh almonds, tuber foods such as sweet potatoes, cassavas, peanuts (groundnuts), carrots, cabbages, sardine fish etc..

They turn to sustain life in all weather conditions especially oceanic weather conditions present along the Atlantic, Pacific and around ponds and lakes.
